    • All-New Discovery has been awarded the maximum five-star rating from Euro NCAP, the globally recognised safety-testing organisation, meaning drivers looking for one of the safest SUV’s need to look no further.

Euro NCAP, or European New Car Assessment Programme, puts new vehicles through a series of rigorous tests, measuring them against a vehicle safety rating system. The results and star ratings of these tests give families and businesses an objective and professional view and the opportunity to identify the right vehicle for their needs.

“Safety and capability have been at the core of the Discovery DNA”

Nick Rogers, Executive Director, Product Engineering

Tested across many scenarios, a number of All-New Discovery’s cutting-edge safety features were key in the vehicle achieving a five-star rating including the provision of up to five ISOFIX mounting points, which allow drivers to fit a child seat in to the vehicle.

Other safety features that contribute to the vehicle’s outstanding crash protection include the Driver Condition Monitor, which monitors steering, acceleration and brake inputs to sense driver fatigue and alert the driver to take a break if needed. Traffic Sign Recognition detects speed limits, road works and other key signs and then alerts the driver via the driver display. Externally, the vehicle is equipped with Adaptive LED headlights, which have five different modes and a 360 degree Surround Camera System which gives drivers an unparalleled view of their surroundings, assisting when exiting blind junctions and during low-speed manoeuvres. Park Assist also utilises this camera system, along with the vehicle’s sensors, to help steer the vehicle into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces.

Alongside these features are autonomous technologies including Intelligent Speed Limiter and Lane Keep Assist. The first automatically adjusts the speed of the vehicle when entering new speed limit zones and the latter detects lane drift and applies corrective counter steering to maintain lane position.

One of the key technologies highlighted in the NCAP tests was Autonomous Emergency Braking or AEB. This collision avoidance system uses a forward facing stereo camera and works by calculating the distance of objects ahead and applying full emergency braking when it detects a collision risk with a pedestrian in the road ahead. This advanced technology operates at speeds which range from 5km/h to 80km/h and received the maximum six marks by the Euro NCAP testers improving safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

This collision avoidance system improves safety, not only for drivers but pedestrians too.

Speaking of Land Rover’s history of safety, Nick Rogers, Land Rover’s Executive Director of Product Engineering said, “It’s only right All-New Discovery continues to lead the way with new safety-focused technologies that meet and exceed global safety standards. Our priority is to protect both the occupants of our cars and other road users, providing peace of mind for our customers.”

The Pedestrian Airbag was introduced to the Discovery Sport in 2014

All-New Discovery being awarded this five-star rating is testament to Land Rover’s long-standing history of introducing new safety technologies. In 1989, Anti-Lock Brakes were fitted to an SUV for the first time by Land Rover engineers and when Discovery Sport was launched in 2014, it featured a pedestrian airbag, a first for the small SUV segment. The vehicle was also the first Land Rover to feature the Autonomous Emergency Braking System. Thanks to its wide range of innovative safety features, Discovery Sport also achieved the maximum five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP upon its launch.
