• Range Rover Sport SVR is renowned for its powerful performance and incredible pace but its capability isn’t limited just to speed.

      A Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations creation, Range Rover Sport SVR combines Land Rover’s legendary off-road capability with 550PS V8 power, and with the addition of advance traction technology, it has proven it is much more than just a sports vehicle.

      To demonstrate its capability, Range Rover Sport SVR was put to the test on grass, gravel, sand and snow and was timed on its 0-100km/h acceleration times on each terrain. Using Terrain Response 2, Land Rover’s technology which can automatically select the appropriate driving mode to suit the traction conditions, the vehicle took on some tough terrain.

      We followed the acceleration test to find out how it faired.

      Asphalt

      To compare Range Rover Sport SVR’s off-road performance it was first tested on road, where it clocked 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds, setting the benchmark for all the other terrains.

      Wet Grass

      The mode to be tested was the; Grass/Gravel/Sand/Snow mode as the Range Rover Sport SVR took on wet grass. Notoriously tricky for any driver to navigate, Land Rover Experience Eastnor had the perfect conditions for the first off-road acceleration test.

      When using the Grass/Gravel/Sand/Snow mode, Range Rover Sport SVR’s throttle response is softened to prevent loss of traction and makes gear changes smoother and quicker.

      The Traction Control System also intervenes earlier to prevent tyre slip while the centre differential is preloaded to optimise off-the-line performance.

      With its powerful V8 engine and the employment of the Traction Control System it took Range Rover Sport SVR a mere 5.5 seconds to complete a controlled sprint of 0-100km/h on wet grass.

      Gravel

      Next up, a quarry provided the ideal terrain to test how the vehicle faired on the loose surface of gravel.

      The inherent traction capability of the vehicle really came to the fore and the vehicle registered a 0-100km/h time of 5.3 seconds.

      Snow and Ice

      Land Rover’s winter driving test facility is based in Arjeplog, Northern Sweden and has the perfect conditions to test the acceleration speed of Range Rover Sport SVR on snow and ice.

      In the freezing temperatures and on the slippery surface the 4x4 system was activated as the acceleration test began. Despite the unfavourable terrain for most sports vehicles, Range Rover Sport SVR went from 0-100km/h and took only 11.3 seconds to do so.

      Mud

      The next test for Range Rover Sport SVR awaited at one of Land Rover’s all-terrain testing facilities in the UK where the muddy conditions were perfect for the next phase of acceleration testing.

      Terrain Response 2 has a Mud and Ruts mode which raises the air suspension of the vehicle while the Traction Control System allows controlled tyre slip to provide better traction on the slippery surface.

      Once again, the result was outstanding. The vehicle logged a 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds, thanks in part, to the intelligent 4x4 technology which came into its own in these typically British conditions.

      Sand

      In 1924, Pendine Sands at Carmarthen Bay, South Wales hosted the first world land speed record run and so was a natural choice for Range Rover Sport SVR’s acceleration test on sand.

      Selecting Sand mode, which sharpens the vehicle’s accelerator responses, the vehicle reached 100km/h in just 5.5 seconds. This incredible speed was a result of Sand mode making the vehicle hold onto gears for longer and locking the centre differential, both helping maintain the vehicle’s momentum during this test.

      Rock Crawl

      The final mode on Terrain Response 2 to be tested was Rock Crawl mode, and called for something a little different. Designed to help drivers negotiate rocky environments, this mode works in conjunction with the low range transmission, in keeping with the low-speed nature of the challenge posed by large rocks and boulders.

      Rock Crawl mode softens the accelerator response to mitigate against sudden movements providing maximum driver control.

      Taking on the 32 percent incline, Range Rover Sport SVR was also helped by the Rock Crawl mode raising the air suspension, optimising ground clearance and helping the vehicle complete this part of the test with ease.

      Come rain or shine, Range Rover Sport SVR demonstrated its off-road capability throughout this extensive testing, proving that whatever the weather, and the effect it has on driving conditions, anyone behind the wheel of Range Rover Sport SVR doesn’t have to compromise on power and performance when embarking on 4x4 off-road driving.
