With 90 and 110 wheelbases, Defender is the ultimate Station Wagon. The compact 90 seats four, while the 110 seats seven.

DEFENDER 90 MULTI-PURPOSE

Engine

Defender’s new 2.2 litre Diesel engine produces an impressive 360Nm of torque. With 90 percent of peak power constantly on tap from as low as 2,200rpm to over 4,350rpm, it provides maximum muscle for tough working environments.

With the introduction of Land Rover’s new Diesel Particulate Filter, not only is the new Defender engine fully compliant with the latest N1 EU5 emissions legislation, it now delivers an historic new top speed of 145kph. The engine is designed to meet modern emissions legislation and features an Anti-Stall device, which intelligently adjusts the fuel required when the engine is working at low speed.

TRANSMISSION & DRIVING DYNAMICS

The driving experience is further enhanced by Defender’s six-speed manual transmission. Specially developed for heavy-duty applications, it is light, strong and also provides smooth on-road performance and slick gear changes.

As Standard with this model of Defender 90 Multi-purpose
Permanent four-wheel drive Permanent four-wheel drive

Unlike many of its competitors, Defender has permanent four-wheel drive with the centre differential distributing torque evenly between front and rear axles to give optimum performance on-road and off-road. What’s more, the centre differential can be locked to help minimise wheel spin and maximise traction on slippery surfaces.

Dual-range six-speed transmission and Locking Differential Dual-range six-speed transmission and Locking Differential

The enormous torque developed by Defender is fully utilised through its robust dual-range transfer box and six-speed gearbox. The available twelve forward and two reverse gears provide the driver with a wide spread of gear ratios to handle heavy-duty applications. The low first gear reduces crawl speed and makes towing almost effortless whether on or off-road, while the high sixth gear produces improved fuel economy when cruising along roads. For extreme off-road conditions such as mud, ice, snow or loose ground, the centre differential can be locked, ensuring power is split equally between each axle to deliver superb traction.

Front and rear beam axle with coil spring suspension Front and rear beam axle with coil spring suspension

Defender’s beam axles, both front and rear, are strong, durable units with excellent cross-angle articulation (590mm on the Defender 90 and 655mm on the 110 version). When driving off road, this ensures maximum wheel contact over uneven ground. The use of coil springs all round ensures a comfortable ride both on and off-road and the overall suspension design allows very short chassis overhang and accounts for the impressive approach and departure angles of the vehicle.

WHEEL OPTIONS

All terrain capability is at the heart of all Land Rover products. The tyres have been specifically engineered to provide outstanding performance at all times, in almost all conditions.
As the all-terrain experts, Land Rover have gone ‘above and beyond’ in testing and development to ensure that the right tyre is provided for maximum traction.
Tyres have an ‘all season capability’, whilst specific tyres have a balance of attributes that may affect their performance in certain circumstances. The size of the wheel and tyre chosen also has a bearing on the vehicle’s performance. Please bear in mind the intended usage of the vehicle when choosing wheel and tyre combinations.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

For maximum control both on and off-road, Defender is available with ABS (excluding 130 models). Detecting any significant difference between wheel speeds during heavy braking, this optional system helps maintain continued progress by automatically reducing brake force to the appropriate wheel. Electronic Traction Control is included in this option.

As Standard with this model of Defender 90 Multi-purpose
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) / Electronic Traction Control (ETC) Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) / Electronic Traction Control (ETC)

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Traction Control (ETC) are both optional features on most Defender models.
If any significant difference between wheel speeds is detected during heavy braking, on road or off road, the four-channel ABS is designed to automatically reduce the braking force applied to that wheel, helping the driver to retain control.
ETC applies a braking force to any wheel that loses traction. Power is therefore redistributed to the wheels with the most traction.

Environmental Responsibility

We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously with an integrated and innovative strategy we call Our Planet. Our plan is simple; to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and the production of man-made CO2 emissions, to use fewer resources and create less waste.

We do this by investing in four key areas areas designed to reduce our carbon footprint, support conservation and humanitarian collaborations and includes one of the world’s most comprehensive CO2 offset programmes.
