Engine
2.2 litre 4 cylinder diesel engine
Defender’s new 2.2 litre Diesel engine produces an impressive 360Nm of torque. With 90 percent of peak power constantly on tap from as low as 2,200rpm to over 4,350rpm, it provides maximum muscle for tough working environments.
With the introduction of Land Rover’s new Diesel Particulate Filter, not only is the new Defender engine fully compliant with the latest N1 EU5 emissions legislation, it now delivers an historic new top speed of 145kph. The engine is designed to meet modern emissions legislation and features an Anti-Stall device, which intelligently adjusts the fuel required when the engine is working at low speed.

DRIVING AND TRANSMISSION
DRIVING AND TRANSMISSION
Specially developed for heavy-duty applications, the six-speed manual transmission also provides smooth on-road performance, effortless gear changes and improves economy.
- As Standard with this model of Defender
-
Permanent four-wheel drive
Permanent four-wheel drive ensures power is sent to all four wheels continuously, on or off-road. With no need to switch between two-wheel and four-wheel drive as conditions change, Defender remains sure-footed and unstoppable. Other vehicle systems (locking centre differential and traction control) come into play if traction at any wheel is lost.
-
Dual-range six-speed transmission and Locking Differential
The enormous torque developed by Defender is fully utilised through its robust dual-range transfer box and six-speed gearbox. The available twelve forward and two reverse gears provide the driver with a wide spread of gear ratios to handle heavy-duty applications. The low first gear reduces crawl speed and makes towing almost effortless whether on or off-road, while the high sixth gear produces improved fuel economy when cruising along roads. For extreme off-road conditions such as mud, ice, snow or loose ground, the centre differential can be locked, ensuring power is split equally between each axle to deliver superb traction.
SUSPENSION AND STEERING
SUSPENSION AND STEERING
Defender owes much of its legendary off-road capability to excellent axle articulation coupled with coil sprung suspension. This helps each wheel maintain contact with the ground and follow the contours of rough surfaces. And with power-assisted steering as standard, relaxed control is assured at all times. Defender’s load carrying capability and the availability of heavy-duty suspension vary in and outside of Europe due to differences in market legislation.
- As Standard with this model of Defender
-
Front and rear beam axle with coil spring suspension
Defender’s beam axles, both front and rear, are strong, durable units with excellent cross-angle articulation (590mm on the Defender 90 and 655mm on the 110 version). When driving off road, this ensures maximum wheel contact over uneven ground. The use of coil springs all round ensures a comfortable ride both on and off-road and the overall suspension design allows very short chassis overhang and accounts for the impressive approach and departure angles of the vehicle.
-
Up to 3,500kg towing capacity
Defender’s strong, rigid chassis helps deliver class-leading on-road towing capabilities of 3,500kg, for a braked trailer. Its chassis is also designed to withstand the rigours of off-road towing. With the possibility of the trailer snagging on hazards such as potholes and ruts, the frame has been developed to withstand an enormous amount of twisting and lateral movement off-road, while still being able to tow a 1 tonne braked trailer.
An engine that delivers high torque at low revs plus an innovative anti-stall engine management system further add to Defender’s excellent towing capabilities.
- Power assisted steering
- Anti-roll bar, front and rear
- Solid disc brakes
- Ventilated disc brakes
SAFETY AND SECURITY
SAFETY AND SECURITY
For maximum control both on and off-road, Defender is available with ABS. Detecting any significant difference between wheel speeds during heavy braking, this optional system helps maintain continued progress by automatically reducing brake force to the appropriate wheel. Electronic Traction Control is also available to help maintain grip in off-road conditions.

- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) / Electronic Traction Control (ETC)
