Motor sport fans enjoyed a high octane occasion at the start of 2014 courtesy of Saudi Arabia’s latest cross-country motor sport event, Rally Jeddah. The off-road event – Jeddah’s first international rally – was held under the patronage of Prince Mishaal bin Majid, Governor of Jeddah, and took place over a three day period starting from 30th January.
A key sponsor of the rally, Land Rover and Mohammed Yousuf Naghi Motors unveiled a Rally Jeddah liveried All-New Range Rover Sport at a press conference prior to the event. As a vehicle that had recently set the record for the fastest crossing of the Empty Quarter, the Range Rover Sport was the obvious official car choice for a cross-country rally of this nature, and was driven throughout the event by 1992 FIA Middle East rally champion, Mamdouh Khayat. Land Rover also played a key scrutineering role, conducting mandatory technical checks at the Auto Mall’s Land Rover Centre ahead of the race start.
The rally started from Jeddah’s picturesque Obhur Corniche with the second and third legs centred on the Al- Burykah area of King Abdullah Economical City. The total competitive route – open to 30 cars across the FIA T1 and T2 classes, 20 motorcycles in various FIM categories, and two T4 trucks – comprised approximately 500 kilometres and was entered by an impressive list of Saudi, Qatari and Emirati drivers and co-drivers.
The event was won by Saudi Arabian driver Yazeed Al-Rajhi. Partnered by French co-driver Alex Winocq, the Hummer driver secured a comfortable victory over second-placed Ahmed Al-Shegawi’s Chevrolet Buggy, while Al-Shammeri finished third overall in the Bakhashab Isuzu Team D-Max.
