The Range Rover
EUROPEAN SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY (ESO), CHILE

BEST VIEWED FROM EARTH
The world’s most advanced optical instrument is not easy to find. For those who dare, the road leads out into the planet’s driest desert, the Atacama, at an altitude of 2,635m where the traveller must stay hydrated and protected from the searing sun. Almost imperceptible in the desert heat, the Paranal Residencia, home to the astrophysicists of the ESO, is built into its landscape, using shifting panels to ensure that the light emerging from the whole building never exceeds that of a single 100-watt bulb. Here the traveller comes face-to-face with the VLT – very large telescope – a series of lenses, some up to 27-foot wide, gazing into distant galaxies and long extinct cosmic light storms. Journey there in The Range Rover.

ZAHA HADID'S CHAMBER MUSIC HALL

BEST APPRECIATED WITH THE HARMONIES OF BACH
What does sound look like? That is what world renowned architect Zaha Hadid asked herself when she was commissioned to design a chamber music hall specifically for the performance of works by Johann Sebastian Bach. What she created was a portable structure of fabric covered steel that graced Amsterdam’s Holland Festival in 2011. The sculptural enclosure is designed for solo performances of Bach’s work, reflecting the fact that his music was written for intimate salons, not vast concert halls. The intricate and easily adaptable structure is currently in Abu Dhabi. Zaha Hadid’s Chamber Music Hall and The Range Rover, individual and iconic designs with purpose.
