Need Professional training?
Training gives people who drive for a living the tools and confidence to perform to the best of their ability. Nowhere is this more important than for people whose driving skills can literally be a matter of life and death. That's why so many organisations that rely on the skills of their vehicle operators also rely on us for their specialist professional training. Our clients include police forces in the UK and overseas, coastguards, paramedics, fire and rescue teams, and the armed forces, to name but a few.
Our broad expertise means we can tailor courses to the specific needs of your organisation. We can fine-tune an existing course, usually at no additional cost, or develop bespoke training that meets specific goals.
Whether or not you use Land Rover vehicles on your fleet, we can equip your staff with the knowledge, skills and techniques they need to perform a huge range of tasks. So it's easier for your organisation to fully comply with driving legislation and ensure your team has the confidence to put their knowledge to effective use in the field.

Driving Skills
Driving Skills
Our Level 1 Off-Road Driving Course helps delegates with little experience of 4x4 vehicles understand the principles and advantages of four wheel drive systems. Our instructors will coach your employees in how to take advantage of these benefits to make safe, efficient and reliable progress both on-road and off-road. As well as providing delegates with extensive coaching in off-road driving techniques, the syllabus includes:
- Ground reading and obstacle recognition skills to help reduce the costly and time-consuming risk that your vehicle becomes stranded or damaged
- Daily checks and maintenance requirements to help operators maximise fleet reliability and minimise total costs.
Normally conducted using Land Rover vehicles, this course can also be delivered in other vehicles by special arrangement.
As you would expect, our Level 2 and 3 off-road courses go far beyond the core health and safety based syllabus of our Level 1 course. From terrain-specific skills (including sand, mud, ruts and even snow driving) to the expertise required for negotiating low friction surfaces at higher speeds, our courses are designed to provide delegates with extensive behind-the-wheel experience. They help participants refine their skills and perfect more advanced vehicle control techniques. We have the breadth of experience to train your team to safely and efficiently negotiate a wide variety of challenging terrains.
LANTRA Awards Professional User Driving Courses
LANTRA Awards Professional User Driving Courses
Land Rover Experience is a registered LANTRA Awards training provider. Our LANTRA- Professional 4x4 User course is based on the established Land Rover Experience Level 1 course, but increases the focus on classroom content to explore the principles of four wheel drive operation in more depth, in line with LANTRA's guidelines. Naturally, participants also spend time behind the wheel putting their classroom learning into practise. The opportunity to practise their off-road driving techniques is complemented by ground-reading and obstacle recognition skills, too. We also cover daily checks and maintenance requirements to help operators maximise fleet reliability and minimise total costs. Like our other driving courses, the LANTRA Awards Professional User course is normally conducted using Land Rovers, although it can also be delivered in other vehicles by special arrangement.
All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) or Quad Bikes can present serious safety risks to inexperienced users. Our two-day LANTRA Awards Professional ATV User course helps ATV users understand the safe operating principles for their machines while helping them reduce costs and improve efficiency. The course covers:
- The principles of ATV operation
- Ground reading
- Obstacle recognition and negotiation techniques
- Vehicle recovery methods
- Practical ATV loading-carrying and towing.
A one-day version of this course is available to users who can demonstrate competence in ATV handling.
Trailer Handling skills
Trailer Handling Skills
Our one-day Level 1 Trailer Handling course is designed to ensure inexperienced operators always get the basics right. The course is based on the trailer elements of the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) car and trailer (B+E) driving test. This is a mandatory requirement for drivers of many vehicle and trailer combinations who passed their car driving test after 1996. Our course includes:
- An overview of trailer construction and roadworthiness
- Principles of safe loading
- Trailer coupling
- Low-speed manoeuvring skills
- On-road towing experience.
An Intensive Trailer Handling course is also available. This road-based course is designed to provide delegates with extensive on-road towing and driving experience to help ensure they can confidently pass their car and trailer driving test. It is usually booked at the end of the Level 1 course.
Off-road towing confronts drivers with a completely new range of hazards and risks. To help address these, we have developed an Advanced Trailer Handling course designed to train operators in the safe and reliable use of trailers off-road. Best practice means continually assessing and mitigating the hazards and risks of towing to the trailer, the towing vehicle and the terrain itself. This course includes:
- Practical experience of negotiating a range of obstacles
- Tight off-road manoeuvring
- Failure-to-climb procedures
- Trailer recovery
- How to change a wheel when off-road.
Vehicle Recovery to protect your assets
Vehicle Recovery to protect your assets
If things do go wrong and vehicles become stranded, it's essential that operators understand how to recover them safely and cost-effectively. Our one-day Level 1 Vehicle Recovery course covers the principles of on-road and off-road vehicle recovery. Plus, you'll learn many rope and strap techniques for both self-recovery and third party vehicle recovery.
Our Level 2 Advanced Vehicle Recovery course provides extensive hands-on experience of more advanced recovery techniques. These include Kinetic Energy Rope Recovery – potentially invaluable yet hazardous in equal measure – as well as the use of air jacks and high lift jacks to extricate more severely stranded vehicles.
Winch Handling
Winch Handling
Level 1 Winch Handling is designed to equip operators with essential health and safety awareness and practical skills to perform safe winch recoveries in many common situations. Course content includes:
- An appreciation of the design and maintenance of winching equipment
- Principles of different winch-recovery configurations
- Practical experience of winch operation in realistic situations
- As a registered LANTRA Awards training provider, we can also offer a LANTRA Awards Winch Operators course based on this syllabus.
Our Level 2 Advanced Winch Handling course builds on the knowledge acquired in the Level 1 course. There's hands-on experience of the winch recovery of stranded vehicles from a wide range of challenging situations. Our instructors coach and guide delegates towards an in-depth understanding of practical, real-world winching techniques and substantially increase their operational confidence. Winching is a diverse topic so the content of this course is frequently tailored to meet operational needs of our customers.
Specialist Skills
Specialist Skills
GPS navigation
Effective, reliable off-road navigation is crucial once you leave the beaten track. Level 1 GPS Navigation equips delegates with the skills needed to ensure they always reach their destination. The course uses Garmin GPS units and includes:
- An overview of navigational principles
- Waypoint planning
- Uploading and downloading of data to hand-held GPS units
- Extensive experience in the application of these skills to navigate vehicles through the extensive grounds of the Eastnor Castle estate.
First Aid
When accidents can happen, knowing the correct first aid treatment can be vital. That's why all of LRE's instructors are trained to the standards set out by the Red Cross. Our one-day Appointed Persons First Aid course is designed to provide delegates with:
- An understanding of common first aid techniques
- How to apply them – where possible, to the specific risks associated with the participant's operations.
The course fee includes a copy of both the delegate pack and the approved course first aid book for each student. However, please note this course does not qualify delegates to be a Health and Safety Executive-approved first aider in the workplace.
We also offer a four-day First Aid at Work course, which is designed to exceed the Health and Safety Executive's requirements for training workplace first-aiders (not only good practice, but also a legal obligation for many UK businesses). Our course balances a more detailed understanding of common first aid techniques with substantial hands-on training.
