3 WAYS LAND ROVER DESIGNERS HELPED BUILD A CHRISTMAS CABIN
  1. 3 WAYS LAND ROVER DESIGNERS HELPED BUILD A CHRISTMAS CABIN

This year, Land Rover decided to indulge in the festive fantasy by creating a unique Wilderness Cabin, compact enough to fit into and be transported by a Discovery Sport, yet spacious enough to comfortably sleep two adults.

    • Christmas conjures up many images in our head; family get-togethers, sumptuous feasts, snowy scenes, roaring fires and secluded winter cabins.

This year, Land Rover decided to indulge in the festive fantasy by creating a unique Wilderness Cabin, compact enough to fit into and be transported by a Discovery Sport, yet spacious enough to comfortably sleep two adults.

In order to do this, Land Rover’s expert team put their skills to the test.

Find out all about the Wilderness Cabin

Having designed a premium compact SUV like the Discovery Sport, known for its versatility, Land Rover engineers applied the same principles that create luxurious and capable vehicles to create the Wilderness Cabin. We take a look at how their years of designing and building Land Rover’s helped create this unique Winter escape.

      Smart Use of Space

Keeping families with an active lifestyle in mind when designed, the highly versatile Discovery Sport has plenty of stowage options, including the 1,698 litre loadspace. Paired with its off-road capability, this made it the ideal vehicle to carry the wooden components that made up the Wilderness Cabin to its remote location in Scotland. All of the accessories needed to furnish this unique festive escape were also stored in the vehicle, with even the cup holders doubling up as a place to safely transport mince pies.

The cabin itself was also designed to maximise its compact space. Not leaving anything to chance Land Rover engineers created their first digital model for it in their 3D Virtual Cave, usually used for car design, to ensure every millimetre of space in the cabin was put to good use.

      Ready for Anything

With temperatures dropping with the onset of winter, Land Rover engineers knew they would have to build a cabin that could deal with the cold, seasonal weather. Designing vehicles that are ready for off-road adventures also means being prepared for any inclement weather encountered along the way. All Land Rover vehicles are rigorously tested in a cold chamber to ensure they can withstand sub-zero temperatures and it was no different for the cabin.

Thanks to the innovative design and materials used, the wooden shelter was able to withstand temperatures as low as –20 degrees, guaranteeing a comfortable stay for those inside, even in the most remote locations.

      Off-Grid Luxury

When assembled, the cabin created a footprint of just 3.5 metres squared, but even in this its compact space there were still some luxurious features.

Despite being off-grid the cabin was supplied with power via USB ports like those found in the Discovery Sport, the only difference being these were powered by a solar panel on the roof of the cabin. This allowed those visiting to charge phones and tablets, even when out in the wilderness.

There was also an optional seating area, created from the tailgate seat found in a Discovery Sport, which could be added to the front deck of the cabin.

Guests were treated to panoramic views from inside, all thanks to large glass doors on either end. These glass openings were inspired by the full-length panoramic roof of the Discovery Sport, a feature which offers passengers the option to soak in their surroundings from a unique point of view.

Creating a cabin as compact and luxurious as the Wilderness Cabin was made possible thanks to many years of expertise Land Rover designers and engineers have garnered when building luxury SUV’s like the Discovery Sport.
