Range Rover wins Autocar Asian Car of the Year 2014
20 April, 2014
Range Rover has further enhanced its reputation as the world's finest capable SUV by being named Autocar Asian Car of the Year 2014 and bringing the total to 69 major awards for the Range Rover to date. The award was presented to Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, at the Beijing Auto Show today.
The prestigious honour is judged by 20 of the region's most respected motoring journalists, including the editors of Autocar magazine in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Collectively, jury members have nearly 200 years of experience writing about and testing cars.
Placing the Range Rover ahead of five other shortlisted new cars, they said: "The new Range Rover is everything a Range Rover is, only better. It pampers you more than some of the best luxury cars in the world and has the go-anywhere capability of a hardcore off-roader. Its sheer breadth of talents have rightfully earned it the title of this year's Autocar Asian Car of the Year."
Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, commented: "To win an award judged by so many experienced and respected journalists is a huge honour for the company. Asia is a fast-expanding market for us. We've listened to our Asian customers and developed tailor-made solutions to address our customers' values and enhance their experiences.
"We're delighted the car's excellence has been recognised. This accolade confirms Range Rover's position at the pinnacle of capability and refinement."
The fourth generation of the luxury SUV to wear the Range Rover badge has been redeveloped to stand as the ultimate car. The new Range Rover is the world's first SUV with a lightweight all-aluminium body. The result of this pioneering approach is a vehicle which is up to 420kg lighter than its predecessor.
The Range Rover is the marque's flagship model for luxury and refinement. The cabin is dominated by strong architectural forms, with elegant surfaces finished in the finest leathers and veneers. To allow customers to create their perfect bespoke vehicle, the unique ambience of the new Range Rover can be extensively personalised with a range of colours, finishes and special detailing, from the immaculately-trimmed colour-themed interiors of the exclusive Autobiography series, to the stylish range of alloy wheels up to 22 inches in diameter.
The Range Rover also stands apart through the diversity of models and breadth of customer choice available. As well as the standard vehicle, the long wheelbase Range Rover offers discerning consumers the ultimate luxury SUV alternative to traditional limousines.
Unlike other luxury vehicles, it offers performance and handling on all terrains thanks to its exceptional ground clearance. Outstanding traction and dynamic stability is provided by the proven Range Rover full-time intelligent 4WD system, with a two-speed transfer box working in parallel with the sophisticated electronic traction control systems. Its unique capabilities include a wading depth of 900mm and a 3,500kg trailer towing capability, the highest in its class.
Range Rover customers have a choice of two petrol and three diesel engines along with a hybrid, all paired with a smooth and responsive eight-speed automatic transmission. Each powertrain represents a significant advance in sustainability. Last year three prototype Range Rover diesel hybrids completed a gruelling 16,000km, 53-day journey from Solihull to Mumbai, India.
