Australian Red Cross’ relationship with Land Rover began in 2010 when we donated five vehicles to Red Cross to service the locust plagues that were covering Victoria. However, it wasn’t until the Floods of 2011 that Red Cross realized how important a resource these vehicles really were. In just a few weeks, thousands of homes and properties were inundated. Families were displaced and businesses were shut down. The Land Rover vehicles enabled Red Cross to not only visit these affected homes and businesses, but to effectively provide personal support to families and individuals.
Land Rover has helped Red Cross visit over 10,000 homes affected by flood and fire. They have been able to engage and provide much needed personal support to nearly 6,000 families, and they have been able to refer over 300 families to contractors, counselors, advisors, and other 3rd parties that have helped them get back on track.
This long term recovery has had an overwhelming positive outcome. Red Cross recovery services have directly resulted in community action groups, business preparedness sessions, local services gaps being addressed, creation of recovery databases, and a tighter relationship with counseling and psychosocial support agencies. For every one of their services, it was a Land Rover getting them there.
As a Red Cross volunteer, Helen Hayes explains, “Red Cross have been very fortunate to have been given Freelanders to use for our Outreach Personal Support teams. Travelling on both flood and fire affected roads over the past two years, the Freelanders have given us the security of 4WD if necessary, a GPS, automatic lights and wipers, great sound system, Bluetooth , comfortable seats with arm rests and room for all our supplies...all contributing to making long days on the road easier.”
