The year 2015 has truly been the year of Defender. Twelve months of celebration marks 67 years of continuous Series Land Rover and Defender production at Solihull and culminates with the auction of a very special vehicle - Defender 2,000,000.
Built during the final year of Defender production, the Defender 2,000,000, has many unique features that distinguish it as a milestone vehicle. Amongst these are a map of Red Wharf Bay engraved into its hand-brushed aluminum fender, a ‘HUE’ number plate, and a unique ‘No. 2,000,000’ badge; creating a fitting tribute to the first ever Land Rover.

Topping off a year of Defender celebrations, this one-off vehicle is set to go under the hammer at Bonhams auction house in London, UK. As part of the countdown to the Defender 2,000,000 arriving at the prestigious auction house, the automotive icon took over central London. Highlights included a Defender taxi, which captured the imagination of passers-by and a converted Defender ice-cream van serving bespoke wafers to Land Rover lovers.
On 16th December, Defender fans will be given the opportunity to buy a piece of automotive history with the sale of this landmark vehicle. Bonhams Auction house, founded in 1793, was chosen as the perfect partner for the sale of this one-of-a-kind vehicle.
Proceeds will benefit two of Land Rover’s long standing conservation partners. The Born Free Foundation and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) will split the proceeds of the sale in recognition of the role Defender has played, and continues to play, in the work they do.
Thanks to its renowned capability, the iconic Defender has been instrumental in reaching remote locations, taking aid and assistance to those that need it most.
Land Rover’s association with the Born Free Foundation is at the very heart of the charity, when Series II Land Rovers featured in the film ‘Born Free’, starring Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, which inspired them to start a charity of the same name.
The Born Free Foundation does vital conservation work and is on the frontline of animal welfare, helping to rescue animals in captivity and providing them with a safe and suitable habitat.
Funds raised by the auction of the vehicle will go towards The ‘Lion Rover’ project in Kenya. This newly established initiative works alongside the Kenyan Wildlife Service, where Land Rover and the local community will ensure that lions are free to live and thrive in the area for generations to come.
Nepal will be the focus for funds raised for the IFRC. The organisation has chosen to use the proceeds from the sale to provide much needed support for communities in Nepal, helping them to respond and recover from crises such as frequent flooding, landslides and earthquakes.
The relationship between Land Rover and the British Red Cross began more than sixty years ago and now extends to the IFRC’s global aid network. Over the course of those six decades, over 120 Defenders have been loaned or donated to the charity, helping deliver humanitarian aid to an estimated 800,000 people across four continents.
With the funds raised from the sale of the Defender 2,000,000 going to these two charities, Land Rover’s proud history of supporting vital conservation and humanitarian work will continue for years to come.
